Meeting a critical demand with vision and innovation
The Department of Nursing offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Mission
The mission of Norwich’s Nursing program is to educate qualified nurses to serve individuals and communities in the promotion of health and management of disease. Through educational excellence, this program challenges students to respond to the complex health-care system in order to ensure optimum quality and value in the provision of patient care.
Innovation
Supported by new simulation laboratories, classrooms and learning laboratories, the Nursing Department offers an environment that encourages student achievement and growth. Clinical affiliations with the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and University of Vermont’s Fletcher Allen Medical Center give students access to excellent clinical resources. Students use a variety of technological applications in the classroom and clinical environments, including handheld PDAs and smart-phone applications for accessing clinical information.
Demand
In an environment where demand for qualified graduates of undergraduate nursing schools far outstrips the ability of universities to supply them, Norwich University is well prepared to help meet this challenge. Norwich nursing students have opportunities to develop skills in a wide array of institutional settings, including two academic medical centers, several critical-access rural hospitals, a VA hospital and a variety of community settings.
ROTC nursing students work at top U.S. Army and Navy hospitals and at facilities around the world during their summer internships.

A third generation Vermonter, I was born in Barre, Vermont. After earning my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree at the University of Vermont, I joined the Norwich faculty in 1985 (being promoted to associate professor and tenured in 1991, and promoted to full professor in 2001).
