    School of Humanities

    Understanding ourselves by understanding others

In an age of growing internationalism, foreign language expertise and cultural sensitivity is crucial. When you learn about another culture and civilization by studying its language, you gain a better understanding of your own culture.

The Modern Languages Department offers minor-degree programs in Chinese, French and German, and a major and minor in Spanish. Courses, conducted primarily in the language of instruction, help students master speaking, aural comprehension, reading and writing.

A language laboratory and electronic study guides are available to assist students.

    Increasing your career options

Foreign-language proficiency enables graduates to communicate with people around the globe. France and Germany are active in high-tech industries and international peacekeeping efforts. Spanish is spoken throughout the United States as well as in Spain, Central and South America. The rapid rise of China, with a population of 1.3 billion people, has created an urgent need to understand the Chinese culture, politics, economy and military.

Students interested in careers in the military, international business, diplomacy, international relations, research and teaching are encouraged to consider improving their grasp of another language.
