    A commitment to hands-on learning

    David Crawford School of Engineering

Norwich University was founded on the idea that people learn better by doing, and engineering students have never shied away from getting their hands dirty. The program stresses lab work, internships and a focus on solving real-world problems.

Students are encouraged to form relationships with colleagues and professors in other departments and universities, with the goal of a better understanding of what drives real-world projects.

Whether it means joining a scientific team living in Antarctica, participating in a multi-university effort to improve the effectiveness of NASA “CubeSat” miniature satellites, finding ways to increase a solar panel’s efficiency, or reviving an old water-powered electrical plant, engineering students apply the knowledge they gain in classrooms to challenges from the outside world.

Students also participate in design contests, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers-run intercollegiate steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions, or the International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition. These exciting projects are carefully mentored by engineering faculty and industry experts, and bring students firsthand experience in testing, design and construction.
